Maharashtra 1960 Part of the state of Bombay.
Kerala 1956 State of Travancore and Cochin.
Nagaland 1963 Union territory.
Haryana (17th State) 1966 Part of Punjab
Karnataka 1956 State of Mysore was formed in 1953, enlarged Mysore in 1956 which was renamed in 1973.
Himachal Pradesh (18th State) 1971 Union Territory.
Manipur, Tripura (19th & 20th state) 1972 Union Territories.
Meghalaya (21th state) 1972 Autonomous state within state of Assam.
Sikkim (22th State) 1975 Associate state since 1974 and a protectorate of India before that.
Mizoram (23th State) 1987 District of Assam till 1972 and Union Territory from 1972 to 1987.
Arunachal Pradesh (24th State) 1987 Union Territory.
Goa (25th State) 1987 Union Territory.
Chhattisgarh (26th State) 2000 Part of Madhya Pradesh.
Uttarakhand (27th State) 2000 Part of Uttar Pradesh.
Jharkhand ( 28th State) 2000 Part of Bihar.

NOTE: Goa, Puducherry, Dadra & Nagar Haveliand Sikkim were not a part of India at the time of independence. Goa was liberated from Portuguese occupation in 1961, Puducherry alongwith Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, was transferred to India in 1954 by the French, Dadra & Nagar Haveli were liberated in 1954 from the Portuguese and Sikkim became a part of India in 1974.

DEVELOPMENT OF PRESS DURING BRITISH RULE The evolution of Indian press during British rule was filled with difficulties like illiteracy, colonial pressure and repression. But later on, it became a prominent tool for the freedom struggle. Some of the important developments are: The first printing press was established by Portuguese in 1556. Great Himalaya Range Rising more than 22,000 feet above sea level and with the stretch of over 1,200 miles along India’s northern border. It has Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak in the world. Middle Himalaya Range An elevation of about 5,000 to 20,000 feet above sea level. There are two major mountain ranges in the Middle Himalaya—the Pir Panjal Range and Dhauladhar Range. Outer Himalaya/Shivalik Range Consists of valleys and hills that rise no more than about 5,000 feet above sea level. A large part of the range is located in Himachal Pradesh. Trans-Himalaya/Karakoram Range Has eight peaks over 24,600 feet in height and its elevation rarely falls below 18,045 feet. The tallest peak, K2 lies here. Trans-Himalaya Ladakh Range The peaks in this range are about 16,400 to 19,700 feet above sea level. The most famous of these is Khardung La lies here.
