Longest Rivers of India: India is a land of rivers. All rivers in India are regarded as holy/religious sites, and they have played an important part in Indian traditions in various ways from prehistoric times. Every area of India is dotted with numerous significant rivers and these massive bodies of water play a significant part in the country's economic growth. 

What is a River?

A river is a natural freshwater watercourse that runs into an ocean, sea, lake, or another river.
The majority of India's main rivers run east and empty into the Bay of Bengal. Only five rivers in India flow from east to west, draining into the Arabian Sea: the Narmada, Mahi, Tapti, Luni, and Sabarmati.

Classification of Rivers

India's rivers are classified into two types: Himalayan Rivers (rivers that originate in the Himalayas) and Peninsular Rivers ( rivers that originate in the Peninsula ). Himalayan rivers are permanent, whereas Peninsular rivers are nourished by the rain.

Ganga River

According to Hindus, the Ganga is the most sacred river. It began in the Himalayas in Gangotri and travelled around 2525 kilometres to reach the Bay of Bengal. It is the world's third-largest river. A number of cities have sprouted up along the Ganga's banks, including Pataliputra, Kashi, Allahabad, Varanasi, and Kolkata. It also formed the Sundarban delta, the world's biggest delta, in West Bengal.

Godavari River

The Godavari River is the longest in southern India and the second biggest in India after the Ganga. It originates in Maharashtra and runs through Andhra Pradesh before merging into the Bay of Bengal after a 1465-kilometer journey.

Krishna River

The Krishna River, which originates in Mahabaleswar in Maharashtra and travels through the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh before merging into the Bay of Bengal, is India's third longest river after the Ganga and the Godavari.

Yamuna River

The Yamuna River began in the Himalayas at the Yamunotri Glacier and flows through various states before joining the Ganga at Triveni, Allahabad. It is 1376 kilometres long in total. The Yamuna River supplied roughly 70% of Delhi's water supply.

Narmada River 

The Narmada River is the fifth-longest river in the Indian subcontinent. Because of its significant contributions, it is also known as the Lifeline of Madhya Pradesh. The Narmada River flows from Narmada Kund in Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh, to the Arabian Sea in Gujarat after a 1312-kilometre journey.
